Huge torque.
But also I suspect, huge repair bills.

based on just the raw numbers the VDub engine is like the Buick 455 from a Stage 1 GSX, or in short torque for days.

They had a mountain of torque (550+), but also fought emissions issues, and bounced in and out of the US line up, eventually getting permanently bounced because it couldn't pass.
Also, incredibly thirsty, considering diesel. Rated at 15/20. Also, they still had the pumpe-duse system, which is crazy on a 10 cylinder. That's 10 fuel pumps, and makes for a more 'diesel' sound than newer common rail systems.

The IT Guy that used to work for my dad had one. He was driving it about 150 miles per day, and said the engine was bulletproof. It was the electronics and whatnot that were just awful.
With that said, he told me that he has never had a car in which so many people offered to buy it from him. Back when it was a few years old, the VW Dealer was gonna trade him two new Jetta TDI's for it.
The guy no longer works for my dad. I have no clue where the VW is now.

A dealer about an hour from me specializes in enthusiast cars. They had an 04 with under 70k miles and were asking $24k a few months ago. If my wife and I weren't upside down in her Passat it'd be here now.

It's VW's previous diesel system. It's like a mini pump at each cylinder, pulling from a pressurized reservoir. It seems pretty scary on such a large scale. I guess they offset the 10 pumps by only having 20 valves!

We work on 2 of these. They're nuts. Just hilariously fast off the line. They seem to be pretty solid, too. One of them is owned by a friend of mine and is over 100k, and he wails on it. We've basically just had to do maintenance & some oil leak repairs. They are really complex underhood, so anything major would be no fun. The engine is by far the best part of the car, because the first gen Touareg is otherwise infuriating.

Pumpe Duse was a new engine on the 2004 Jetta, I think they used it throughout the 5th generation, the one in my avatar is a PD MKIV.

It was an interesting approach, but I think diesel would have a harder time going mainstream without common rail.

What whitetrashsteve said. That thing has enough torque to drag most bro trucks against their will from here to Alberta.

Let me explain one thing to you.
The engine in the truck in front of you has enough torque to shame almost all non-diesel trucks even today, 10 YEARS after it first appeared.
granted, 310 horsepower isn't a lot out of 4.9 Liters and 2 turbos, but then again it's a diesel. The acceleration this thing is capable of between 50 and 80 MPH is fucking incredible. "Pulls like a freight train" doesn't begin to describe it. The only reason why I didn't get one as my first car was maintenance. try fixing the air suspension on this bad boy for less than $2K.
Still, amazing rig

I would totally just go around randomly racing ricers and whoever else thinks they have a superiority complex just because their car is smaller.
Wonder how much they're going for nowadays..... I'd love to have one if I ever decide to have kids.

Sounds ridiculous at first, but it was worth maybe 42k trade in at the time. Jetta TDI's were around 20K each.

Very interesting. Not even a Passat or a newer Touareg.
